    CB Radio “Don’ts”.

    When using a CB radio,
you should not use profanity, engage in overly long conversations, transmit confidential information, or illegally modify your equipment.
    Etiquette and communication don'ts
    • Don't interrupt ongoing conversations unless it's an emergency. Always listen first to ensure the channel is clear before transmitting.
    • Don't "hog" a channel. Conversations are limited to five consecutive minutes, and you must take a one-minute break before transmitting again on the same channel.
    • Don't transmit confidential or sensitive information. The 40 CB channels are shared and not private, so you should assume others may be listening to your communication.
    • Don't shout or speak too quickly. The microphone amplifies your voice, so speak clearly and at a slightly slower-than-normal pace.
    • Don't use unnecessary sound effects or music, as the channels are for communication, not entertainment.
    • Don't drive distracted. While CB radios can increase safety, leave complex adjustments for rest stops to avoid taking your attention off the road.
    Rules and legal don'ts
    • Don't use profanity, obscene, or indecent language. Such broadcasts are prohibited by federal law and can lead to FCC enforcement actions.
    • Don't illegally modify your CB radio. It is forbidden to modify the radio internally, attach an external power amplifier (often called a "linear"), or use it on unauthorized frequencies outside of the 40 official channels.
    • Don't use your radio to communicate with stations beyond 155.3 miles (250km). This practice, known as "shooting skip," is illegal even though signals can sometimes naturally travel further.
    • Don't use Channel 9 for non-emergency chatter. This channel is reserved exclusively for emergency communications and traveler assistance.
    • Don't promote illegal activities or sell goods and services on CB channels. These uses are explicitly prohibited by FCC rules.
    • Don't give out personal information, especially if you are a trucker. Avoid sharing details about your location, destination, or the contents of your cargo for safety reasons.
