    She Broke Her Toes!

We are truckers and our little Nikki goes with us everywhere. She does have a bad habit of jumping up and putting her paws on the door so she can look out. This is a habit that we have been trying to break for awhile now.

When my hubby was getting into the truck, Nikki jumped to look about the window and tumbled to the ground. My husband did get her slowed down a bit, but she tried to land on her feet and ended breaking her toes. We felt so bad. We took her to the emergency hospital, because it was on a Sunday and everything else was closed, and it ran us $500 just to get them to see her. A lot steeper than we had expected, but had to get her seen.

They took her back and did the X-rays and then wrapped her leg in a splint. She was not a happy girl.

As we carried her back out to the semi, she kicked that splint right off. That kind of made me angry since we had just paid them a lot of money. I turned around, picked up the splint they ad put on her, and marched right back into the vet hospital. They supposedly “fixed” it so it would stay. We didn’t get very far when she kicked it off again. This time, we wrapped and splinted it ourselves.

We actually got pretty good at wrapping her leg and foot. It actually stayed on better than the one they put on.

She is now healed but likes to act like her foot hurts when we try to get her to do something she does not want to do. You may think that “maybe her foot is still bothering her”. Problem is, she forgets which foot it actually was. One day she will hold up her left foot. The next day, or later on, she will hold up her right foot. She is just a silly girl. But we love her to pieces.

One thing you should keep an eye on is their leg area. The tape will pull out their fur and then start making small sores. So keep an eye on that area. If your dog is anything like ours, that wrapping will not stay on too long. You are not doing anything wrong. Dogs just seem to know how to take them off. Too smart sometimes.
