The owner of an 18-wheeler at the center of a Dallas Police investigation wants to clear his company's name. This week, police asked the public's help to identify a big-rig involved in a crash a week ago that caused another driver to lose his arm.
According to the Dallas Police Department (DPD), around 6 a.m. on Tuesday, August 19, police received a call of a crash involving an 18-wheeler.
Police said, according to their preliminary investigation, the driver of the truck was headed northbound in the 5300 block of S. Cockrell Hill Rd when it hit another vehicle and left the scene.
DPD put out a picture of the truck with a distinctive Dallas Cowboys star on the side.
On Wednesday, the man injured, Carlos Campos, spoke with NBC 5 and said he was driving home from work at the time. He said his windows were down because the air conditioning in his SUV wasn't working.
His arm was resting on the door when the collision happened. Campos, 26, ended up losing part of his left arm, claims the truck driver was at fault and swerved into him.
After police put out a public plea to help identify the truck and several news stories, the owner of the truck said he contacted police immediately.
"I'm really, really sorry about what happened to Mr. Carlos, but my truck never, never hit his car, never," said the owner.
He asked NBC 5 to conceal his identity and company because of threatening phone calls he has received. He wanted to be referred to as 'Enrique.'
"I'm afraid. I mean, I'm receiving phone calls through private numbers. They're calling me and saying, 'Hey dude, I know where you stay, I know where you parked your truck. We're going to beat your a**, you better watch your six," described Enrique, who said he's been in contact with a detective to let them know what's happening.
Enrique said a business near the crash site gave him two black and white surveillance videos that he believes show what took place.
"You can clearly see on the video that my driver is traveling about 20 to 30 miles per hour in the middle lane, and you can clearly see his SUV coming from the back at a high speed, impacting the back of the trailer. He (the SUV driver) tried to swing to the right, avoiding the impact," said Enrique.
The owner claims his driver did not feel the impact because of the large load of sheetrock the truck was hauling.
"Then, on the other video, you can see him just keep driving off, he did not stop. And my driver kept going at a normal speed," said Enrique. "I didn't find out about this until like eight days later."
He said after police put out the alert, they were looking for his truck, he reached out to DPD.
"I know my driver, I know how responsible he is, and he would never lie to me," explained Enrique, who said he's known the driver for almost 20 years. "I called my driver, I asked him, 'Hey, what is going on? What happened? Be honest, it's okay, just be honest.' He was like, 'Boss, I don't know what you're talking about. I don't have any idea of what you're talking about," reflected Enrique.
The owner said he told police to inspect his truck and said he would give them anything they needed. He said investigators found white paint from the SUV on the back of the trailer.
Thursday afternoon, NBC 5 reached back out to Campos, who said he's sticking to his story and believes the 18-wheeler was in the wrong.
Dallas Police confirm that investigators were provided the two black and white videos by the owner of the truck. DPD is still investigating the incident.
