Driver without CDL driving for illegal company placed on ICE detainer for fatal US 20 crash

A truck driver without a CDL has been placed on an ICE detainer after a fatal crash in Indiana last week.

The crash happened on October 15th on US Highway 20 in Portage, Indiana at 1:21 p.m.

According to Fox 32, a Ram Sprinter van was stopped on eastbound US 20 attempting to turn left onto Douglas when a semi truck driven by Broko Stankovic approached it without slowing. Stankkovic then suddenly swerved left and entered the westbound lanes of US 20, where it collided with a Subaru Crosstreek. The collision caused the tractor trailer to jackknife, sending the cab of the semi truck sliding into the stopped van, which was then pushed into a road sign.

Both people in the van were treated at the scene and released, but the 54-year-old motorist in the Subaru died at the scene.

Police soon discovered that Stankovic did not possess his own CDL, but did have a suspended CDL belonging to a family member on his person. The trucking company Stankovic was driving for was also not registered with DOT.

Stankovic was taken into custody and charged with one felony count of criminal recklessness resulting in death and one felony count of reckless homicide. He was taken to the Porter County Jail, where it was determined, through his immigration status, that he would be placed on an ICE detainer.

As of October 20th, it is unclear if Stankovic is in the custody of Porter County Jail, or ICE.
