The 21-year-old truck driver suspected of DUI in a deadly crash in Southern California earlier this week has been identified as an illegal immigrant.
21-year-old Jashanpreet Singh had his first interaction with border patrol at the southern border in 2022. He was later released back into the US pending an immigration hearing as part of a Biden era “alternatives to detention” policy.
Singh was arrested on Tuesday, October 21st after a deadly pile up crash in Ontario, California. Investigators say Singh did not hit the brakes before slamming into a line of stopped traffic on the 10 Freeway. Toxicology reports have confirmed that Singh was under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash, reported The NY Post. Three people were killed and four were seriously injured. Two of the deceased people were so badly burned that they have not been identified, reported ABC 7.
Dashcam footage from Singh’s semi truck has been released since the accident. Police say the footage proves no other vehicles cut in front of Singh just before the crash. The possibility of mechanical failure is still being investigated.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that Singh is an illegal immigrant from India. Singh has been placed on an immigration detainer by ICE. He is currently being held in San Bernardino County on charges of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He is expected to appear in court on Thursday, October 23rd, reported Fox11.
“This is exactly why @USDOT has withheld $40 MILLION from California for failure to comply with our rules to protect drivers,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy wrote on X. “We cannot allow our roads to be a dangerous place!”
