    Backing A Semi Truck Tips

    To safely back a semi-truck,
use the G.O.A.L. (Get Out And Look) method, roll down your window and use your mirrors, move slowly, and have a spotter if possible. Eliminate all distractions, such as the radio, and position your truck to create the easiest angle for the maneuver before starting.
    Before you begin
    • Position your truck: Pull ahead of your intended spot to give yourself enough room to maneuver and align the tractor and trailer.
    • Adjust mirrors: Make sure your mirrors are clean and properly adjusted for a clear view of your surroundings.
    • Eliminate distractions: Turn off the radio, CB, and any other sources of noise. Roll down your window so you can hear what's happening outside.
    • Use G.O.A.L.: Before you start, get out and look. Walk around the entire vehicle to check for any people, objects, or other hazards that you might not see from the cab.
This video demonstrates how to set up for and execute a 90-degree backing maneuver:

    During the maneuver
    • Move slowly: Back up at a slow, steady pace to give yourself time to make small adjustments and react to anything that changes.
    • Use a spotter: When possible, use a qualified spotter to guide you. Agree on hand signals before you start, and make sure the spotter is in a location where you can see them in your mirror.
    • Look at your mirrors: Constantly check your mirrors to see how the trailer is tracking. Remember that the trailer will move in the opposite direction of the top of the steering wheel.
    • Stay calm and focused: Rushing or panicking can lead to accidents. Stay focused on the task and avoid distractions.
    • Make small adjustments: Make minor adjustments to the steering wheel as needed, but avoid oversteering.
    After you finish
    • Check your work: Once backed in, get out to ensure the trailer is properly positioned and the parking brake is set.
    • Secure the trailer: Engage the parking and trailer brakes and chock the wheels.
    • Perform final actions: Finish the process by winding down the landing gear, unhooking the trailer, and slowly pulling the tractor away.
