    Keep The AC Smelling Good

A stale or unpleasant odor coming from the AC in your big rig can be a common issue, but there are several steps you can take to keep it smelling fresh.

    1. Address the root cause: mold and mildew
    • Evaporator Coils and Drain Pan: Mold and mildew often grow on the AC evaporator coils and in the drain pan due to moisture buildup.
      • Clean or Replace Air Filters: Regularly clean or replace the cabin air filters to prevent moisture buildup and filter out particles that can become a food source for mold. Consider using activated carbon or baking soda-infused filters to absorb odors.
      • Clean the AC Unit: If the problem persists, you may need to clean the evaporator coils and drain pan more thoroughly. Use a coil cleaner, or, in some cases, a mild detergent and a soft brush.

    2. Ensure proper drainage
    • Check the Condensate Drain: The AC produces condensation, which should drain out through a tube under the vehicle. A clogged drain can cause water to collect and lead to mold growth.
      • Unclog the Drain Tube: If you don't see water dripping under your truck when the AC is running, the drain might be clogged. Carefully clear it using a wire or compressed air.

    3. Clean the vents and ductwork
    • Remove Debris: Check the air intake vents, often located at the base of the windshield, for leaves and other debris.
    • Blow Out Vents: Use compressed air and a vacuum to remove dust and debris from the ducts.
    • Wipe with Cleaner: Wipe reachable surfaces with a microfiber cloth dampened with an all-purpose cleaner.
    • Treat with Disinfectant: You can use a dedicated AC system cleaner/deodorizer or a disinfectant like Lysol sprayed into the intake vents with the fan running on low, and the AC off.

    4. Preventative measures
    • Dry the Evaporator: Before turning off your truck, turn off the AC and run the fan on high for a few minutes. This helps dry out the evaporator and reduce moisture that can lead to mold growth.
    • Increase Ventilation: Open windows and use fans to improve air circulation and reduce humidity.
    • Use Natural Odor Absorbers: Baking soda or activated charcoal can help absorb odors.
    • Regular Servicing: Consider professional cleaning and maintenance, especially if the odors persist, or if you suspect a more serious issue like a refrigerant leak.

By following these steps, you can help ensure that your big rig's AC continues to provide you with fresh, clean air throughout your journeys.
